NEWELL THOMAS DENNIS, SR., age 88, of Mt. Pleasant passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at his home.

Funeral Services for Newell will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, at Clark Family Funeral Chapel with Benjamen Evers officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, September 11, at Clark Family Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Mid Michigan Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Newell was born on May 26, 1929, in Isabella County, the son of Francis and Bessie (Gary) Dennis. Newell graduated in the Class of 1947 from Mt. Pleasant High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a disabled American veteran. He was a life member of VFW Post 3033 and the American Legion. Newell was an administrative manager for Isabella Bank & Trust for 32 years, retiring in 1992. He married Shirley Spencer on June 14, 1953. He enjoyed metal detecting, camping, gardening and loved going for rides with his son Dave.

Newell is survived by his wife, Shirley Dennis of Mt. Pleasant; children, Martha Dennis of Mason, David Dennis of Mt. Pleasant, and Lisa (Russell) Clifford of Ann Arbor; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Newell was preceded in death by his son, Newell “Thomas” Dennis; brothers, Cecil, Floyd and Lloyd; and sister, Vivian Raymond.
