Richard Paul "Dick" Sherbarth
SHERBARTH, RICHARD "DICK" PAUL, age 93, of Lake passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the Masonic Pathways in Alma.

Funeral Services for Dick will be held at the Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at 2 p.m. A Luncheon will immediately follow in the Reflections Reception Center. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 27, from 3 to 6 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue the day of the service from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pine River Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Dick was born on August 8, 1924, in St. Paul, MN, to Clarence and Gertrude (Sundquist) Sherbarth. He moved with his parents and sister, Marlys, to Pontiac, MI, in 1937. The family later moved to Auburn Heights, where Dick graduated from high school in 1942. He assisted in the family business before joining the United States Navy. Dick served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters from 1942 to 1946.

Following his discharge from the military, he was employed by the United States Postal Service in Birmingham, MI, and later transferred to Mt. Pleasant. Dick was married to Gertrude Manderfield in 1952 and they became the proud parents of Gordon Dennis "Cork" in 1959.

Dick was an active member of the Masonic Lodges in Mt. Pleasant and Weidman, where he served as past Master at both locations. He was also a member of the Rosebush Presbyterian Church, where he soon became known as their handyman and was always happy to help. Dick was well known for his pie making abilities. If there was a bake sale or a pot luck, he would be there with pies. His specialty was a homemade rhubarb pie, which was sure to please the palate. He currently was a member of Blanchard Pine River United Methodist Church. Dick's interests and hobbies were many. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, canoeing, woodworking, playing cards, most any outdoor activities, and getting together with friends for supper or breakfast. Another great love was sailing. Dick sailed the Great Lakes for 20 years. During this period of time, he took many guests on enjoyable sailing trips in the Traverse City area.

He and his son enjoyed many camping and canoeing trips together in Northern Michigan and Canada, as well as many hours spent together on his sailboat. Dick was a very compassionate, kind gentlemen, who loved being around people and helping them. He was always quick to volunteer his time and efforts if anything needed to be painted or fixed.

Dick is survived by his special companion, Mary Loomis and cousins, Shirley Kovar and Nan Caldwell.

Dick was preceded in death by his son, Gordon "Cork" Sherbarth on April 23, 2015; parents; and sister, Maryls Smith.
