He was born on June 10, 1923 in Dewey, Illinois to the late Leslie and Mary Alexander of Owosso, Michigan, where he grew up and spent his early life. He is survived by Yolanda, “Boots”, his wife of 72 years, children Darlene (Bruce) Lewis, Cindy (Gordon) Sauer, Dan (Cherry) Alexander and Kip (Deb) Alexander, along with 9 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
Chuck left his farm to serve for the Army in the Philippines during World War II, returning to play varsity basketball and graduate with a Physical Education degree from Central Michigan University (CMU). A sports and recreation enthusiast, he was a very successful high school football and basketball coach at Corunna, Michigan, winning the Class C State Championship in football in 1955, with 32 straight wins over 4 years. Chuck was a teacher and later a principal at Corunna High School for several years. He was a leader in the community, serving in Rotary International and organizing youth summer recreation leagues.
Chuck obtained his Master’s and Specialist’s degrees from Michigan State University in Education Administration and changed careers, moving to the university level in 1967 as an assistant placement director at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Soon after, he realized a life ambition by returning to Mount Pleasant and his alma mater, CMU, as Director of Placement for the last 19 years of his career, retiring in 1988. Chuck was a leader in the Midwest College Placement Association and helped select many Michigan school system superintendents by volunteering his time and traveling around the state.
Since his return to Mt. Pleasant 48 years ago, Chuck was a true CMU Chip superfan. A proud member/donor of CMU Alumni groups, he often went to closed team practices, was known by many of the athletes and coaches, and loved attending countless sporting contests for both men and women. In retirement, he once served as Homecoming Grand Marshall, a fitting tribute to his CMU loyalty.
