I had the privilege of playing football for Coach Alexander for four years. He led us to the State Championship in 1955. I recall the first team meeting, that year, in which he identified the goal of a championship and the means to attain it. His vision became our vision. No one scored on our defense for the entire season and the offense gave up only 13 points. Before our final game against Durand, I recall him telling us he had asked the Detroit Free Press what it would take to be declared the State Champion. He said if we could beat Durand, we would get the title. We won 55-0 and claimed the title.
I have played for many coaches, and Coach Alexander was my favorite. He had absolute discipline - I can not think of an instance where his leadership was challenged. He showed us that hard work paid great dividends - and made sure we did plenty of work. He was a masterful motivator. He set a great example for all of us, and taught us all how to be winners. I coached for many years, and I used a lot from his 'playbook'.
While I knew Coach Alexander best as a coach (football and baseball for me), he was more than a coach to me. My life has been more rich and successful because of the lessons he taught me. I was fortunate to attend the Air Force Academy as a result of our team's success in football. I owe him considerable credit for the fact I graduated - largely because of his great influence in my life.
He was a great man and a wonderful man. I am saddened today, but I still have many great memories of the times Coach invested in us to make us better men.
My condolences to Boots and his family. I pray for God's comfort for you. Neal
